Memento From the Wedding of Cilla & Edwin Stroh December 1931

A memento from the Wedding of
Miss Cilla Kaufmann
and Mr. Edwin Stroh
Vienna, 29th of December, 1931, י"ט טבת תרצ"ב
Presented by the Frauenhilfe of the Adas Yisroel

In honor of Ma and Dally’s wedding, which took place in Vienna December 29, 1931 י"ט טבת תרצ"ב, the Frauenhilfe [Woman's Aid Society] of the Adas Yisroel, Schiffschull, presented a large card signed by many of the wedding guests.

Among the guests who signed the card were Ma’s two grandfathers, Opi Deutch and Yitzchok Nachman Kauffmann. Dally’s Grandmother Mathilde Breuer who came from Sopron signed as well. Dally’s other grandmother, Chana Stroh, who was in her nineties was probably too frail to travel from Grossvardein in Romania to attend the wedding. The signatures of many uncles, aunts, cousins, friends and members of the Schiffschull are also found on the card.

There are no photographs of the wedding. Ma would relate that the reason they did not have pictures at their wedding was due to the insistence of Dally’s cousin R’ Asher Stroh הי"ד that pictures were not appropriate.

R’ Asher Stroh was a תלמיד חכם and a chavrusah of R’ Mordechai Yafe-Schlesinger the last rav of Eisenstadt.

We have tried to decipher the signatures and identify the signatories, if anyone can help identify the remaining signatures it would be appreciated.

  1. Thank you very much for the email it is much appreciated.
Signature #31 as you state is Lazar Schischa, he was a brother of my grandfather Leopold Schischa. Lazar Schischa never did get married, he lived his final years after the war in Geneva by his sister's son Avrohom Mueller. Lazar and Leopold's mother was Gittel Tziporah, her maiden name was Breuer she was a sister of Shlome Zalman Breuer the grandfather of "Dally"

    1. Thank you YYW. We updated the post with your information.

Dally and the Schischas were half cousins. Gittel Tzipoah and Shlomo Zalman shared the same father David Breuer. However Shlomo Zalman's mother Shvartzel nee Deutsch died very young and David remarried to Mamela nee Neuman. Gittel Tziprah's mother was Mamela.

  2. Yeyasher kochacho on the new post!

Interesting to see that the official name of the Schiffshul was Adas Yisroel - which is also a name of some Yekke Shuls, as in Berlin (although licheora Adas Yeshurun/Kehal Adas Yeshurun, as the name of a Shul is even more 'Yekkish'). Perhaps another indication of the close relations between Oberlanders and Yekkes.

Interesting. Was he Chassidish/into Kabbalah? How common was such an attitude among Oberlander? Interesting that held even as late as 1931. I was under the impression that by then it had mostly died out. Okay, with rare exceptions....

Zei gezund, keep up the good work!
